1. POSITION VACANT: Assistant Village Director (Family Like Care), SOS Children’s Villages of India (7 Vacancies – Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Bangalore, Rourkela & Bhubaneswar)
2. ORGANISATION BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1949 in Austria, SOS Children’s Villages began its operations in India in 1964. Registered as an independent, non-governmental and not-for-profit organisation, SOS Children’s Villages of India (SOS CVI), works for the holistic development of parentless children, women and children belonging to vulnerable families.
Over the past 60 years, the organisation has reached over 65,000 children through 32 SOS Children’s Villages and 28 community projects in India, positively impacting over 83,000 lives. It continues to provide children without parental care or at the risk of losing it, a value chain of quality care services that goes beyond childcare alone, to ensure comprehensive child development as well as ways to strengthen communities and families as a preventive measure in the fight against abandonment and social neglect.

3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Village Director – Family Like Care, the Assistant Village Director (AVD) will support the overall functioning and management of the SOS Children’s Village and coordinate day-to-day village activities. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring quality child care within the framework of the SOS family childcare model, while supporting the development of children, SOS families, and co-workers.
The role will ensure that the needs and rights of children are addressed and respected, support SOS Mothers in caregiving, and contribute to effective planning, reporting, financial management, and compliance with organisational policies and statutory requirements. S/he will also represent the organisation at the local level and coordinate with external stakeholders.
Key Job Responsibilities:
A. Child Care, Development and Legal Responsibility
(1) Ensure the overall development, protection, and well-being of children and youth by identifying, respecting, and addressing their individual needs and rights, while building positive relationships through regular interaction and providing guidance to support their growth into responsible and successful individuals;
(2) Act as the legal guardian of the children, ensuring accountability to their biological roots, government child protection systems, legal bodies, and all relevant stakeholders, while upholding the highest standards of care and protection.
B. Education, Youth Development and Self-Reliance
(1) Ensure access to quality, value-based education for all children within the Village, with a focus on holistic development and long-term outcomes;
(2) Support youth in skill development, employability, and career readiness initiatives to promote self-reliance and successful transition into independent and sustainable livelihoods.
C. Village Operations, Financial Management and Statutory Compliance
(1) Lead the overall management of the SOS Children’s Village, including preparation of annual budgets, securing approvals, and monitoring financial performance to ensure adherence to planned allocations;
(2) Coordinate planning, budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation processes while ensuring compliance with organisational policies, manuals, standards, and guidelines, and promoting efficient and responsible use of financial and physical resources;
(3) Chair key committees including the Village Committee, Child Admission Committee, and Child Protection Committee, and ensure full compliance with all legal and statutory requirements in the capacity of legal representative of the organisation.
D. Strengthening SOS Families and Supporting SOS Mothers
(1) Ensure a nurturing, secure, and development-oriented environment within SOS families by promoting strong and long-term family relationships and regularly visiting SOS families to monitor well-being;
(2) Provide continuous guidance, support, and accessibility to SOS Mothers in their caregiving responsibilities, ensuring a safe and enabling environment, while facilitating their professional development and monitoring services extended to them.
E. Youth Programme Management and Support to Co-workers
(1) Ensure high-quality youth care across youth facilities and programmes by maintaining oversight of youth needs, development, and access to career, learning, and growth opportunities;
(2) Regularly visit youth facilities to guide and support co-workers, while coordinating their professional development, monitoring systems, and ensuring effective delivery of youth care services.
F. Leadership, Team Management and Human Resource Development
(1) Provide strategic leadership to all village co-workers in alignment with SOS policies and values by fostering a participative, transparent, and learning-oriented work environment, while strengthening communication, teamwork, and knowledge sharing across teams;
(2) Lead recruitment, onboarding, and orientation processes in consultation with senior leadership, conduct performance appraisals, provide continuous feedback, and encourage co-workers to take ownership of their learning and development;
(3) Manage personnel administration including maintenance of personnel records and leave management, ensure compliance with service rules, and consult senior leadership on key human resource matters as required.
G. Stakeholder Engagement, Partnerships and Representation
(1) Establish and strengthen partnerships with government bodies including Child Welfare Committees and Departments of Women & Child Development, Education, and Health, as well as NGOs, civil society organisations, and community stakeholders to ensure effective programme delivery;
(2) Represent the organisation in local networks, advocacy initiatives, and media engagements in line with organisational guidelines, while promoting integration of the Children’s Village within the surrounding community.
H. Contribution to National Association and Resource Mobilization
(1) Participate actively in national planning and evaluation processes, share best practices, and contribute to the development of organisational policies and national child and youth care initiatives;
(2) Support fundraising efforts by providing programme insights, documentation, and relevant materials, while promoting awareness among co-workers on the importance of resource mobilization and strengthening recognition of the SOS family model.

5. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:
Qualification:
(1) Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Social Work/Social Sciences.
(2) A Bachelor’s degree in Education will be an added advantage.
Experience:
(1) Minimum 8–10 years of relevant professional experience;
(2) Demonstrated leadership exposure at a senior management/executive level, preferably within the NGO or public sector;
(3) Experience in one or more of the following areas: child and/or youth care, community development, human resource management, psychology, or education.
Languages:
Excellent communication skills in English and regional languages; proficiency in 1–2 regional languages will be an advantage.

6. COMPENSATION OFFERED:
Gross compensation budgeted for the position is attractive and in alignment with salaries paid for similar roles in leading I/NGOs. The offer made to the selected candidate shall be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and salary history.

Note:
(1) Certain locations involve working closely with girls’ or boys’ residential communities. Candidate suitability will be considered carefully, keeping in mind child safeguarding, cultural sensitivities, and the well-being of children;
(2) This is a full-time residential role within the SOS Children’s Village; candidates must be willing to relocate. The position requires high levels of commitment, responsibility, and passion for child care and development, and travel may be required as per organizational needs.
