3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Reporting to the Senior Director – Communications and Business Development, India, the Director Communications shall be the brand custodian and lead communicator of Smile Train India. S/he shall be responsible for internal and external branding, advocacy and awareness, communication, and events. S/he shall be responsible for the maintenance, and growth, of Smile Train’s branding, advocacy, and communications presence in the country and shall provide oversight, direction, and action for implementing effective and efficient strategies in line with regional needs and global objectives, as well as internal guidelines, for achieving the organization’s objectives.

 

The Director Communications shall be responsible for tailoring Smile Train communications strategy and brand voice for the India context. S/he will build strong relationships with key audiences and use influence and excellent storytelling skills to energize and align internal and external stakeholders to ultimately grow the organization’s impact and brand reputation.

 

The ideal candidate shall be a passionate storyteller and a strategic thinker, who will not be afraid to roll up her/ his sleeves, or pivot quickly, to effect a change in course. Just as importantly, s/he shall be aligned to Smile Train values, know what Smile Train does and the impact of their work on communities across India and beyond.

 

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

 

A. Strategy/ Strategic Input:

 

(1) Develop strategic messages with clear business goals, target audiences, dissemination methods, and metrics for monitoring implementation and/or impact;

(2) Advance a strategy and voice for executive communications, including speaking engagements, media interviews, social media channels, and stakeholder communications;

(3) Drive new approaches to deliver outcomes viz. focused communications in creative, efficient, and effective ways by challenging current processes, and recommending and executing alternatives;

(4) Ensure consistent and innovative communications support to organizational strategy and continue to elevate the brand's image;

(5) Provide support as and when required by programs, Regional Director, and global teams.

 

B. Thought Leadership:

 

Lead and direct the portfolio of external India/ regional collaborations and events, leading to new speaking engagements (for the Regional Director), guest articles, and participation in relevant forums. Ensure positioning of Smile Train as a thought leader in the cleft/ healthcare space.

 

C. Public Relations and Media:

 

(1) Oversee the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities, in alignment with the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership;

(2) Manage all public relations opportunities and events. This shall include developing press engagement strategies and press releases for key Smile Train milestones and activities, identifying interaction opportunities for Smile Train’s spokespersons, organizing press conferences, as well as other opportunities for bylines, authored articles and blogs;

 

(3) Earned Media/ Brand

 

(a) Develop BIG PR Ideas that consistently enhance the image and authority of Smile Train’s brand and market share across India;

(b) Ensure a regular cadence of outreach to media and influencers around key themes, organizational news, and trends, to showcase the Smile Train brand and relevance;

(c) Leverage market/ supporter research and data insights to develop press-worthy narratives that drive awareness and engagement.

 

D. Content Management/ Oversight:

 

(1) Social Media:

 

(a) Create, plan, and implement content streams on the organization’s different global social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn), to garner likes, impressions, engagement, and donations;

(b) Collaborate with the Regional Director, Program Directors, and HQ Communications team, to gather and strategically promote content from the field;

 

(2) Website:

 

Keep the website relevant and updated with fresh content viz. blogs, press releases, news updates, campaigns, etc.

 

E. Programs Communications:

 

(1) Research key advocacy topics that align with Smile Train focus areas;

(2) Develop an India-specific advocacy toolkit;

(3) Establish a programmatic event calendar, highlighting key themes and priorities;

(4) Develop and iterate communications tools and materials for new and existing programs. The goal of these materials shall be to bolster the visibility of Smile Train’s superb program activities around the country;

(5) In collaboration with the Programs’ Team, the Director Communications will lead:

(a) The development of Internal and external programs communications materials, including but not limited to one-pagers, blog posts, newsletters, social media posts, website content, and other compelling communications;

(b) Programmatic Twitter engagement and expansion;

(c) A programmatic event calendar, highlighting key themes and priorities;

(d) Research around key advocacy topics in alignment with Smile Train focus areas, and develop guides on language, individuals, and upcoming events/ campaigns;

(e) Advocacy campaigns across Smile Train’s priority focus areas, including global and country-level advocacy toolkits;

(f) Message frameworks, original content, and talking points for key initiatives;

(g) The development of an internal “speakers bureau” of key global health champions across Smile Train priority focus areas to provide communications to elevate research and researchers in low- and middle-income countries.

 

(6) Storytelling / Content

 

(a) Act as a lead storyteller for Smile Train India by adopting a purpose-led and human-centered storytelling approach that demonstrates the organization’s impact on critical issues and brings Smile Train’s impact to life;

(b) Coordinate with colleagues across the organization to create unique and compelling narratives, localize global stories, and identify trends and news-making opportunities that bolster brand awareness;

(c) Content: Provide support and oversight for the development, and ongoing management of marketing initiatives and present locally relevant content for fundraising and communications initiatives;

(d) Manage vendors/agencies: Support the supervisor in the area of communications and provide clear direction on expected deliverables. This shall include, but is not limited to, digital communications, graphic design, and PR.

 

F. Program Awareness Campaigns:

 

Provide media viz. radio, print, and social media support for Smile Train’s localized program awareness programs.

 

G. Volunteer Management:

 

Engage with volunteer prospects and connect them to relevant opportunities.

 

H. Support Events:

 

Providing complete media and social media, branding, and design support, for key milestone events of Smile Train India.

 

I. Manage/ Oversee Collaborations:

 

(1) Goodwill Ambassador Management: Responsible for engaging Smile Train’s India based goodwill ambassadors and organizing signature events for awareness and brand visibility. Engaging with new ambassadors for the India program and building long term relationships.

(2) Relationship management Miss Diva Organization: Liaise with Miss Diva organization to leverage the global partnership with Miss Universe Organization. Facilitate engagement opportunities with title holders and social media support for Smile Train.

(3) National Partnerships with medical associations: Oversee ongoing  partnerships with medical associations to ensure visibility for Smile Train and build new meaningful partnerships and joint resources with relevant medical organizations.

(4) Relationship Management of partnerships with government and quasi-government organizations: Responsible for building on existing partnerships and leveraging the  Smile Train supporter ecosystem to build new national partnerships with government organizations.

(5) Management of Advisory Council: Responsible for management of Smile Train’s India Advisory Council. This includes arranging meetings, maintaining strong relationships and working with supervisor for following up with asks from individual council members.

 

4. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

 

Qualifications:
(1) Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related area;

(2) Applicants with a master’s degree in marketing, communications, media, journalism, business administration, and/or management, shall be preferred.

 

Experience:
(1) At least eight years of experience in communications, in the development, impact or CSR sectors;

(2) Experience of short and long-form creative content development, as well as storytelling and proactive communications;

(3) Experience in customizing communications for a wider audience, using multiple channels and mediums. Familiarity with email marketing will be an advantage;

(4) Experience and fluency with digital communications tools, including social media platforms, and leveraging technology to identify and effectively communicate with diverse audiences;

(5) Experience of working at a global level and with diverse not-for-profits shall be an asset.

(7) Willingness and ability to travel approximately 30% of the time.

 

5. COMPENSATION OFFERED:

 

Gross compensation budgeted for the position is attractive. The offer made to the selected candidate shall be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and salary history.
